Woods That We Stabilize

At ResAlign, we specialize in professional resin stabilization of wood selected for cue making, turning, knife making, custom woodworking, and other precision applications. While many species can benefit from stabilization, the results depend heavily on the individual piece of wood—its density, porosity, grain structure, natural oil content, moisture level, and overall condition. Stabilization is particularly beneficial for porous, figured, burl, spalted, and softer woods that may otherwise be difficult to machine consistently. During the stabilization process, air is evacuated from the porous structure of the wood under deep vacuum. Once the vacuum is released, stabilization resin is able to move into the spaces previously occupied by that air. The material is then heat-cured, converting the absorbed resin into a solid polymer within the wood. 

Because every piece of natural wood is different, we evaluate material based on the actual characteristics of the wood rather than assuming that every piece of a particular species will respond identically.

Burl Woods

Burls are among the materials that can benefit most from professional stabilization.

Burl wood develops with highly irregular grain direction, swirling figure, eyes, inclusions, voids, and areas of dramatically different density. These characteristics are exactly what make burl so desirable, but they can also make untreated material more challenging to machine.

Depending on the individual piece, stabilization can greatly improve the working characteristics of burl by adding hardened resin to the porous areas of the material.

Burl species we commonly consider for stabilization include:

  • Amboyna Burl

  • Maple Burl

  • Black Ash Burl

  • Box Elder Burl

  • Redwood Burl

  • Buckeye Burl

  • Myrtle Burl

  • Eucalyptus Burl

  • Australian Burl Species

  • Other Domestic and Exotic Burls

Highly figured burl may contain areas ranging from relatively dense solid wood to very porous sections within the same blank. For this reason, two blanks from the same burl can absorb substantially different amounts of resin.

For high-value cue-making burl, our objective is not simply to put the material through a vacuum chamber. The wood is prepared, dried, vacuum-processed, allowed to soak, cured, and inspected as part of a complete stabilization process.

 

Spalted and Punky Woods

Spalted and partially punky woods are excellent candidates for stabilization when they retain sufficient structural integrity to be processed safely.

Spalting can create dramatic black zone lines, color variations, and figure, but the fungal activity responsible for spalting can also leave portions of the material soft or weakened.

Professional stabilization can harden suitable porous areas and transform material that may otherwise be difficult to machine into a much more workable product. Cactus Juice is specifically intended for hardening and stabilizing porous material and is particularly effective with punky and spalted wood. 

However, stabilization should not be confused with structural reconstruction. Wood that has deteriorated to the point that it is crumbling, severely rotten, or incapable of supporting itself may be too compromised for conventional stabilization. Each piece is evaluated individually.

 

Figured Maple

Figured maple can be an excellent stabilization candidate, particularly when the material contains areas of varying density.

We accept many types of figured maple, including:

  • Curly Maple

  • Tiger Maple

  • Flame Maple

  • Quilted Maple

  • Birdseye Maple

  • Maple Burl

  • Spalted Maple

  • Box Elder and Figured Box Elder

For cue-making applications, stabilization can be especially useful when highly figured material will be machined into precision components such as forearms, butt sleeves, handles, ring material, joint protectors, and decorative components.

Not every piece of maple requires stabilization. Straight-grained, dense, structurally sound maple may already possess excellent working characteristics. We evaluate stabilization based on the intended application and the characteristics of the individual blank.

 

Highly Figured Woods

Extreme figure is beautiful, but the grain structure that creates that appearance can make some material less predictable during machining.

We stabilize many types of highly figured wood, including:

  • Quilted material

  • Curly material

  • Crotch figure

  • Feather figure

  • Fiddleback figure

  • Burl figure

  • Birdseye figure

  • Spalted figure

  • Irregular and interlocked grain material

For cue makers in particular, these woods are often selected specifically because of their visual character. Stabilization provides an additional option for preparing suitable figured material before it is turned into precision components.

 

Porous Woods

Porous woods are generally the materials most naturally suited to vacuum resin stabilization because their structure provides space into which stabilization resin can penetrate.

Resin uptake can vary considerably even within a single species. Density, grain orientation, growing conditions, location within the tree, moisture content, and natural defects can all influence how a particular blank behaves.

A lightweight, porous blank may gain considerably more weight during stabilization than a dense blank of the same dimensions.

For that reason, we do not judge stabilization quality solely by how many ounces or grams a piece gains.

 

Exotic Woods

Many exotic woods can be considered for stabilization, but this is an area where species identification becomes particularly important.

Some exotic woods are relatively porous and accept stabilization resin well. Others are naturally extremely dense, oily, waxy, or resinous and may accept very little resin.

We evaluate exotic species individually before accepting them for processing.

Possible candidates may include certain:

  • Exotic burls

  • Figured tropical hardwoods

  • Mango

  • Guava

  • Avocado

  • Palm species

  • Figured imported hardwoods

  • Lightweight or porous exotic species

Acceptance does not mean that every exotic species will absorb the same amount of resin or achieve the same degree of penetration.

 

Black Palm and Other Palm Materials

Palm materials are structurally different from conventional hardwoods and can contain dramatic contrasts between harder vascular bundles and softer surrounding material.

Because of this variation, individual pieces can respond differently during processing.

Black Palm and similar palm materials are evaluated individually for condition, density, dimensions, and intended use before stabilization.

 

Cue-Making Woods

Cue making is one of our primary areas of focus.

We understand that material intended for a high-end cue may eventually be machined to very precise dimensions. A beautiful piece of wood is of little value to a cue maker if it cannot be processed reliably.

We accept suitable material intended for:

  • Forearms

  • Butt sleeves

  • Handles

  • Ring billets

  • Joint protectors

  • Inlay material

  • Decorative components

  • Specialty cue parts

  • Other cue-making applications

If you are sending material for a specific cue component, we encourage you to tell us its intended use when submitting your order.

This allows us to better understand the importance of the piece and evaluate whether conventional resin stabilization is appropriate for that particular material.

 

Dense Woods

Extremely dense woods may not benefit significantly from stabilization.

If the cellular structure of a piece provides very little available space for resin, the wood may absorb only a small amount regardless of how long it remains under vacuum or atmospheric soak.

This does not necessarily indicate a processing failure. It can simply mean the wood is naturally too dense to accept a meaningful quantity of resin.

For this reason, we may recommend against stabilization when we believe the material is already sufficiently dense or unlikely to benefit from the process.

 

Oily and Resinous Woods

Naturally oily woods require special consideration.

Under vacuum, natural oils can be drawn from certain species. Those oils can interfere with the stabilization process and may contaminate the resin. TurnTex specifically recommends avoiding oily woods such as Cocobolo and Rosewood when using Cactus Juice for this reason.

Examples of woods that may require evaluation or may be declined include:

  • Cocobolo

  • Certain Rosewoods

  • Other exceptionally oily tropical hardwoods

  • Woods containing heavy natural resins or extractives

  • Material that has previously been treated with oil, wax, finish, or other chemicals

If you are uncertain about the species, contact us before shipping it.

 

Previously Treated Wood

Please tell us if your wood has previously been treated with:

  • Oil

  • Wax

  • Wood hardener

  • Finish

  • Sealer

  • Preservative

  • Resin

  • Dye

  • Chemical treatment

  • Unknown stabilizing products

Previous treatments may affect resin penetration, adhesion, curing, or the ability to reuse the stabilization resin.

We reserve the right to decline material that could contaminate a stabilization batch.

 

Wood With Cracks, Voids and Natural Defects

Stabilization is not the same as casting.

Thin stabilization resin is designed primarily to penetrate porous wood. It should not be expected to completely fill large cracks, bark inclusions, open knots, wormholes, major voids, or missing sections.

Material containing these features may require a separate casting process after stabilization.

Stabilization also cannot guarantee that an existing crack will disappear or that internally damaged wood will become structurally perfect.

 

Every Piece of Wood Is Different

This is one of the most important things to understand about professional wood stabilization.

Species alone does not determine the result.

Two pieces cut from the same tree can behave differently. Two blanks of identical dimensions can require different vacuum times, absorb different amounts of resin, and finish at different weights.

The stabilization process is affected by:

  • Species

  • Density

  • Porosity

  • Grain orientation

  • Figure

  • Moisture content

  • Natural oil content

  • Internal defects

  • Blank dimensions

  • Previous treatment

  • Individual cellular structure

Vacuum processing time can also vary substantially by material. TurnTex notes that evacuation may range from several hours to more than 24 hours depending on the wood and equipment, with 12 or more hours being common. Some species also benefit from substantially longer atmospheric soak periods. 

For this reason, ResAlign does not process wood according to an arbitrary fixed vacuum time. We process the material according to how the wood actually responds.
